A Short History of Festoon
Melissa
Ong opened Festoon Salon in 1989. She began this venture with
the hope of realizing her dream to create a salon atmosphere
where employees could grow, prosper, be challenged, and enjoy a
beautiful environment. However, in the beginning, Melissa was
faced with many challenges herself in her attempt to create this
environment. And, after three years of fruitless hard work,
Melissa resolved to begin a new chapter. In 1992, Melissa and
John Ryan were married, becoming partners in life and business.
Together they endeavored to renovate Festoon so that Melissa's
original dream could be achieved.
Melissa and John's first task in this renaissance period was
to figure out why Melissa had not accomplished her goals in her
first attempt. They came to learn the importance of having a
financially strong business to support the dream. They realized
that in order for Festoon to be successful that there had to be
supportive relationship between business and artistry. With this
new concept, Festoon proceeded to grow, prosper, and become
renowned for its profitability and creative talents.

Stylists
Our reputation is based on our creative talents, outstanding
skills, and excellent customer service. Festoon believes that in
order to provide quality services a stylist must have a strong
foundation in both cutting and coloring. As a result, we realize
the importance of continuing education, and are very supportive
of our stylists seeking advanced technical training. To support
the technical growth of our stylists we have formed a close
relationship with the Bumble & Bumble institute in New York.
With their support, we have been fine-tuning our razor cutting
techniques over the past four years. Our stylists also receive
advanced training in color from Goldwell. In addition to this
supportive environment, Festoon also provides the following
benefits: commission on services and retail, paid educational
trips, quarterly bonuses, end of year bonuses, unpaid leave
time, health insurance, pension plan, annual holiday gathering,
and annual weekend getaway.

making microdermabrasion services available in September of 2000
and opening a new spa in San Francisco in the spring of 2001.

Apprentices
The apprenticeship program is the heart of Festoon. We take
great pride in our training program. We have taken ten years to
create a program that we believe produces truly well rounded
stylists. Our expectations for our apprentices are high. We
expect them to develop incredible technical skills, strong
customer service skills, and excellent retailing abilities. As
an apprentice, one works a forty-hour workweek, which includes
an eight-hour day for class. On this class day, you will be
given technical and customer service instruction. To complete
the program, the apprentice must make his or her way through
each level by demonstrating their technical skills with models.
Once they have passed all the levels the apprentice is then
given the opportunity to cut and color as a stylist at Festoon.
In addition to this extensive training program the apprentices
also receive the following benefits: retail commission,
discounted products, gratis hair and skin services, opportunity
to participate in outside training programs, hourly pay rate,
and an open door policy. We welcome both those who do and do not
have cosmetology licenses. If you are interested in
participating in our apprenticeship program, please feel free to
contact us for more information or come by and observe our
program in action. And, if you are a salon owner interested in
starting an apprenticeship program of your own, you can contact
us to receive our educational materials and/or set up a day to
come in and have the "Festoon Experience".
